When Gabriel the Archangel had been created a long time ago he had intended to be a simple messenger. He was an archangel and warrior of God but he was not as strong as his other brothers. It wasn’t that he didn’t have some importance he did but just not in the soldier aspect. His older brother Michael was clearly the warrior of all the brothers and fierce. He was the one that served God without question with his loyalty. That was why he had banished Lucifer to Hell as his father wished. And he was the one who had been placed in charge of Heaven in God’s absence. It had simply been too much for Gabriel to handle seeing his angelic family fall apart. He had actually been quite fond of Lucifer before he was banished but had been afraid to stand up for him when he spoke against what their father wished. It had been the first time that Gabriel actually experienced a human emotion…doubt. And how was that possible? Well, of all the angels he had visited the Earth far more frequently and interacted with the humans. In doing this he was able to experience human emotion.
Yet at that time he had been fearful of what would be done to him had he chose to take a stand. And at that point their father had made his own choice to abandon them so why should he care what he thought? To him Heaven was no longer the place that he remembered fondly and he wished to escape it. That was when he decided to descend to Earth and establish himself as the pagan god Loki. And he had to admit that it also brought him more respect. In his days as Loki he also learned to let go of his archangel self of a marble statute and become something much more. He truly learned what a gift the Earth and his father’s creations truly were. He was worshipped and adored by many. And then when he became The Trickster to mess with mortals? Well that was fun too because in his eyes he was still serving Heaven in punishing the wicked. What did he care if some humans died? They were sinners in his mind and deserved it. And just who did they think they were thinking they were all high and mighty above everyone else?
Then all of that changed when he ran into Sam and Dean Winchester. Of course he knew who they were. Who in Heaven didn’t? They were the chosen vessels for Michael and Lucifer for when the battle on Earth would take place when Lucifer was freed from Hell. It was already predestined and there was no way to stop it. Lucifer would be freed and The Apocalypse would begin. Of course Gabriel had secretly hoped that somehow it could be averted. But no Sam had fulfilled his destiny and released Lucifer from his prison. And now the planet that Gabriel had been indulging in all that time was threatened to be destroyed because of The Apocalypse and the battle between Michael and Lucifer. Not everyone would die but most of the population would. And when the battle was over and Heaven won…there would be paradise on Earth. What was that saying that one has to break a lot of eggs in order to get an omelet? In Gabriel’s case he just wanted to get it over and done with. All the events had been set into motion and there was no way to stop it.
However he had not counted on his guise being revealed as the Archangel Gabriel. He had obviously underestimated the Winchester brothers. What made it worse was that it was a HUMAN that called him out saying that he had been too afraid to stand up to his family. How dare him! A puny human telling an ARCHANGEL such a thing? It was unheard of! If he had wanted he could have gone and hunted Dean Winchester and killed him with the snap of his fingers. So why hadn’t he? Because deep down he realized that he was right in what he had said. And when he discovered that his adopted pagan family planned on capturing Sam and Dean to lure Lucifer he knew what he had to do. That was once again when Dean showed him that he needed to save his pagan family from a terrible fate. At first he had been afraid to face Lucifer but soon gathered the courage and made his stand to save Kali and Dean and Sam. It was when he realized that he would defend the human race against his older brother and unfortunately paid the ultimate price by dying for it.
He had never lived to see the outcome which was the Apocalypse stopped and his two archangel brothers falling into the very same cage that he had told Sam and Dean how to unlock. A year later he was resurrected by one of his brothers who somehow escaped the cage…Michael. And it was shortly thereafter that he learned that it had been ordained that now he would be the leader of Heaven. Not understanding why he took the role nevertheless determined to make changes for the better. And that was when for the first time in his existence that he had fallen in love with a human female whose name was Cadence. In doing so he threatened to be banished from Heaven due to an old rule but being the leader of Heaven was able to change that. He would later be blessed with two wonderful children and marry Cadence making her both his wife and queen. Of course there had been some resistance from Heaven that he had chosen a human for his queen but it was quickly squashed. In establishing the new royal court of Heaven, Gabriel had not hesitated to make his good friend Castiel a part of it. They had shared differences in the past but all that had been put behind them.
It seemed that peace was indeed possible and that both Heaven and Earth could exist in harmony. But Gabriel had not counted that his older brother Lucifer would also escape from the cage and eventually rekindle the very apocalypse that had been prevented 6 years ago. The Earth was plunged into chaos and darkness as the creatures from Purgatory were let loose upon the world. Gabriel and Castiel both had been forced to flee with their families while planning retaliation. It had taken two years but Gabriel had been confident of their victory against Lucifer in the battle that would take place between Heaven and Hell. Gabriel had mighty angel garrisons that could easily crush any army. And all of the movements had been calculated precise. Yet something had gone terribly wrong. Lucifer’s army had proved to be too much and most of their garrisons had fallen. Gabriel had watched as many brave angels were cut down on the battlefield. It was an image that he knew would haunt him for the rest of his life. His brothers that had served him so loyally were now dead with the ashes of their wings upon the ground.
Heaven had been defeated by the forces of Hell and now two of its leaders were being taken back to Lucifer. Gabriel and Castiel had both been outnumbered and thought for certain they would die. But instead they were placed into chains with sigils on them to prevent any kind of escape and practically dragged back to the newly established kingdom by Lucifer. It was at that particular moment that Gabriel realized just how close to mortality he truly was. He was completely powerless to whatever his brother decided to do with him. But that was something he didn’t want to think about just now. Right now he was just worried on making it there because of how weak he was. He may have been an archangel but he still was contained inside of a human vessel which meant he experienced pain and fatigue. As they were dragged toward the city in chains and tried to keep up with the horses they were behind. They finally slowed down enough to where he could turn toward Castiel. And for that first time he could clearly see how bloody he truly was. Because of the sigiled chains Castiel had no means to heal himself.
“Cas, I want you to know that I am truly sorry about this. Somehow….we underestimated my brother. I…I really do not know what went wrong. All those poor angels who are dead now.” Gabriel shook his head. “This was a terrible blow to our forces. I….I don’t know if we can ever recover from it. But what I want to know….is why didn’t they kill us? Is it because my brother wishes to humiliate us BEFORE killing us? Or….does he have something much more sinister in mind?”

Castiel was the first angels, to do most of these things. Most of the reason that he and Gabriel were in this mess was because of him, and he knew it. Ever since he met Sam and Dean, he started having second thoughts about what his true orders were. He remembered a long time ago when Dean came back from Hell and was asked to torture Alastair. He KNEW that it would mess with Dean’s head, and he KNEW that things would just be... bad after that, and still, Castiel questioned his orders anyway. That was mostly because of Anna. Anna spoke to him and the way she spoke made him realize that things were not what they should seem. That some of these orders really were NOT coming from God.
Castiel had died, a few times. Sam had killed him when he was Lucifer, and he knew Sam remembered it. When Sam killed Castiel, he had been human. When Castiel was brought back, he was angel once again. That was when he attempted to try to find the fallen angels to help them restore their grace. He knew that Raphael would want all the angels he could get on his side, and the fallen were in danger. Still, Castiel knew, he knew that things were starting to go from bad to worse and there was nothing he could do about it. However, in the midst of everything, Castiel had managed to fall in love. He met Christine, and started feeling these human emotions towards her. For some reason, his emotions never left since he was brought back. Christine was one of the fallen that he had been searching for, and he almost instantly fell in love with her. He was pretty certain angels COULDN’T fall in love, but Gabriel had, so why shouldn’t he?
When Castiel and Christine started spending time together, Lucifer had become furious, because Christine was his first love when they were in Heaven. Castiel didn’t realize this, but found out later. Castiel wasn’t afraid though, and he wasn’t about to give her up to Lucifer either. Soon, Castiel found that Christine was pregnant, which also in turn, happened to Gabriel who had his kids first. Christine gave him a son, and they named him Theliel. Castiel adored Theliel in ever way. When Lucifer started to appear once more, and Castiel realized the apocalypse wasn’t over...he took Christine and Theliel into hiding because he was afraid for their safety.
Gabriel had been leader of Heaven, and appointed as such. He had tried everything in his power to keep everyone safe, and Castiel knew that not even he could stop the events from unfolding in front of them. God had a plan, and for some reason...it was to allow Lucifer to roam the Earth. Soon, Earth was in chaos. Everything was a mess and Castiel was hiding ot with Christine and Theliel, but he was also fighting the war. He didn’t know what he would do should his family be harmed. He was trying to keep them a secret.
Eventually when Heaven was defeated, Castiel and Gabriel found themselvs trapped and being taken to Lucifer. Castiel was surprised they weren’t killed outright and on the spot. For some reason, they were placed into chains with sigils on them. Castiel couldn’t escape and he didn’t know where his family was and it scared him. Did Lucifer find their hiding spot? That terrified him more then anything. Castiel was powerless, he couldn’t fight, couldn’t heal...couldn’t do anything in these chains.
They were being dragged towards the city that Lucifer was in. Castiel knew it was death row. He knew that they would die, and surely.... Castiel felt it. He felt his weakness, and the fact that he was nearly covered in Head to Toe in blood. The pain was unbearable.
Gabriel started to talk, and Castiel heard him, but could barely respond. He looked at his brother as he started talking to him. The pain he was feeling was overpowering him as he looked up weakly at Gabriel. The pain in his eyes were noticeable. “Gabriel...” he whispered and coughed. Was that blood? It was...was he dying? He figured he was. There was nothing he could do to heal himself either. He closed his eyes painfully as it hurt to speak. “Gabriel...this is...not your fault...” he said, it was the only thing he could think of that was somewhat comforting. “If it is meant to be it is...meant to be...” he coughed once more and closed his eyes painfully. He looked back up at Gabriel. “What...happens to me doesn’t matter...so long as they are safe...” he whispered thinking of his family. “I...don’t know why he hasn’t killed us...” Castiel answered. “All I can think of is....my family....” he said and the moment he thought of it tears fell. He couldn’t imagine what they were going through, and he was terrified that Lucifer had them. "I do not...blame you for this..." Castiel said and coughed once more as they continued to drag him. "I can not make it..." he said softly. "I am sorry Gabriel..." he thought for sure this was what Death felt like for humans. "I wish I could..tell Christine I love her..."

It had all happened too quickly for Gabriel to comprehend. After thousands of years he had gone from an archangel to a pagan god. His carefree ways left him little responsibility and to him his existence was nothing but a huge party consisting of wine, women and song. He had nearly even drunk the pagan god Bacchus under the table once. He was like the Hugh Heffner of the gods and LOVED it. And then he had gone back to an archangel again. But this time he DID have responsibility. At first it was to prevent Lucifer from killing his lover Kali and to stand up for the humans. Unfortunately he had died for that cause. Then to be resurrected and suddenly placed into the spotlight as leader of Heaven which gave him even MORE responsibility. Not only did he have the sake of Heaven to worry about but the Earth as well. To go from a trickster to the King of Heaven was quite the change of pace. Sometimes he had felt as if his head was spinning. The fate of the planet and even in some ways the universe had been placed into his hands.
Gabriel was anything but a military leader but he had many that were and helped him prepare his strategy for the battle against Lucifer. It had taken some time to get the angels on his side but he had finally succeeded except for the ones that chosen allegiance to Lucifer. There was nothing he could do to change their minds and that was unfortunate. But the ones that he had left were as determined as he was to save the humans and protect Heaven from its enemies. They knew how important this battle would be which is why it took some time to organize and plot it. If there was one thing that Gabriel knew it was that his older brother would not play fair. As difficult as it was they would have to think that same way if they were going to stand a chance. They had even sent spies to see what Lucifer was planning. All the strategy that had been put into place was to guarantee success. With everything they had it would be close to impossible to be defeated. And yet they had been. Two years of plotting this battle and most of the leaders were either dead or retreating with whatever dignity they had left.
And the terrible thing was that Gabriel would forever be haunted by what happened on that battlefield. The images of dead angels scorched into the ground and the sounds of their screams as they were run through would never leave him. They had paid a terrible price and now the planet would be enslaved because of it. He didn’t know if they were the only ones that were now prisoners of Lucifer’s but the truth was he really didn’t want to know. It was bad enough that he had the deaths of several brothers on his conscience but the last thing he needed was to know that they were being tortured. He was completely exhausted from the battle but was determined to keep his head as much as possible. He knew that was the one way to get to Lucifer….to not give in. It was possible that was the reason that he was actually able to keep up behind the guards as they were dragged. There was no way that he was going to show weakness to his brother if he could help it. He was NOT the same Gabriel that had faced him all those years ago and died at his hand.
“No. This was not meant to be, Cas. Stop talking that way. You have to snap out of it do you hear me? Stop with these negative thoughts. We…we can’t dwell on this. At least…not in front of Lucifer. He is going to use our weakness against us, Cas. It IS important that you live. Stop thinking that it is not. I don’t know what went wrong but…I am not about to give up. Because IF we do…then all those angels that died in that battle will have died in vain. Not to mention we have to be strong for our families. You will see Christine again just as I will see Cadence. If anything your family should be what gives you strength to get through this. Do you think that they would be pleased knowing that you were saying these things and feeling this way? I can answer you in that my Cady would NOT be happy and most likely slap me upside the head.”
Gabriel hated being so harsh to Castiel but he was doing it for his own good. He knew that Castiel wouldn’t last as a prisoner if he didn’t toughen up. And right now Castiel was all he had. Gabriel also knew that he had to change his depressing attitude about the battle or it would also weaken him. Then the next thing he knew he felt the chains being pulled again along with being prodded in the back by some kind of sharp weapon. Already being weakened and caught off guard he fell to the ground and was dragged for a few moments before eventually getting to his feet again. When he was brought into the city it was going to be on his feet and not on the ground like some kind of animal. As he followed with the quickened pace he glared at the guard.
“Oh yeah? Well you tell your… LORD…to stick it where the sun don’t shine and to kiss my lily white archangel ass.”

Castiel had not thought things had gotten this bad, to a point where he was giving up, but he didn’t know what else to do. Castiel would follow Gabriel until the end, and it looked like it was going to be the end, for the both of them. He didn’t really know what to think anymore, about anything. All he knew was, they had to find a way to stop Lucifer. Even if that was impossible. They had to find out somehow. Castiel was worried about A’Albiel. She had been with them, but was ordered to stay back. Did she follow those orders? Or was she one of the ones that was captured as well. He was to worried to even think about it. If Lucifer had her....he would destroy her. She was not meant for this battle and Castiel had been reluctant to bring her in the first place.
Castiel watched Gabriel as he started to talk to him, trying to take in the words he was saying. Nothing was making sense. None of this. How did they let it get this far? They didn’t that was the problem. It just did. There was really nothing Gabriel could have done, and Castiel believed that. He truly had. He believed in his brother more then Gabriel could probably imagine. Castiel had stood by his side the moment he became leader. The moment he was heavens King. He would fight until the end too, no matter what it cost him. That’s when he thought of his family again. Castiel closed his eyes as he thought of them. He prayed that they were safe somewhere. Not that praying did a lot of good these days.
Castiel looked up as he realized Gabriel was talking to him once more, or was he continuing? He was so out of it nothing made sense. The pain he felt was...human, and extremely painful. He looked at Gabriel and tried to listen. “I-I know...” he said softly. Gabriel was saying something about not giving up. Don’t have negative thoughts. “I won’t....give up...” Castiel managed to choke out. He could barely talk let alone fight. He didn’t know how he was expected to fight when he could barely talk. He just simply nodded the best he could, “Yea....Christine would...be upset...” he agreed weakly.
After they paused a moment Castiel could feel his chains being pulled. He fell to the ground weakly unable to walk any further. The demon, or whatever it was held a knife to his neck. “Walk...” it muttered. Castiel looked at him, “Can’t...” Castiel said softly. He tried but fell again. He looked down. How was he going to finish this? How much further would they make him go? The creatures expected them to stand, as if this was some sort of medieval torture chamber.
Castiel felt the tip of the sword as the guard placed a hugh gash on his leg. He cried out in pain unable to heal himself. “Walk!” the guard said.
Castiel looked at his leg and of course, he couldn’t walk as the guard had wanted to. Castiel frowned “HOW?” he asked angrily. He tried to get up but fell again as his human leg was bleeding. He looked at Gabriel desperately. There was nothing he could do. The guard lashed out on his arm this time and Castiel cried out. Finally, he stood up, not having any choice. He closed his eyes as the pain was overcoming him. He limped. That was the best he could do, but at least he was up. He looked at Gabriel pathetically. “What he said.....” he said pointing to Gabriel weakly and nearly falling over again. He was trying, he wasn’t making much progress but he was trying.

The pain that Gabriel was experiencing right now was even worse than when he had been stabbed in the heart by Lucifer. At least when that had happened it had been a quick pain and then all was silent. It had not lingered as it was now. But in this case it was not only physical but mental pain as well. His entire body wracked with pain from the battle and his human vessel was weakened considerably. And normally the healing ability that he possessed could have been used to fix his condition but he was in sigiled chains. This was one of the first times that he had been in his human vessel that he realized just what true pain felt like. Oh sure he had been shot at, stabbed and such but that had been minor compared to what had taken place on the battle field between the armies of Heaven and Hell. And the battle had not just taken place in the span of a few days. Oh no there had been smaller battles in the beginning since The Apocalypse had begun two years ago. Both sides had been making little hits trying to assess their enemies’ weaknesses.
And unfortunately during that process mankind and the Earth both had suffered. The land that had once been bountiful was now mostly nothing but a vast, scorched wasteland. There were still some places that were forest but they were rare. As for the mighty oceans they had been lessened and erosion had caused much of the shorelines to be taken away. The lakes that had once been a part of states such as Michigan and Minnesota were either dried up or half their size. It truly did look as if a nuclear bomb had gone off only it was the ENTIRE world. Oh yes these battles had not just been in the United States but rather at different parts of the globe. This was why it had taken two years because of having to move the armies back and forth so much. There were key areas that needed to be secured for either side and neither was giving them up without a fight. And the thing was Lucifer and Gabriel were not always present at the battles either but rather relied on their leaders to carry them out. In Gabriel’s case he had Michael who was more than qualified.
All the pieces had been put into place just like on a chessboard and the two kings one of Heaven and the other of Hell carefully planned their moves. Unfortunately the human race got caught in the crossfire many times because the armies of Hell did not exactly fight fair. If Gabriel had been able to have it completely his way it would have been a battle in which innocents would not have been affected. However his older brother Lucifer was quite the opposite and wanted to take as many of them as he could with him. Michael was a valiant military leader and was the main reason that the Heavenly army had been able to keep its foothold as long as it had. Gabriel even had Sammael on his side which was not exactly normal as the archangel brothers did not exactly get along. But desperate times called for desperate measures and differences had been put aside for the greater good. There was one thing that united the brothers together and that was their hatred of Lucifer. Or…in Gabriel’s case he really didn’t hate his brother but just didn’t agree with what he stood for. The last thing he wanted to do was fight him but had been given little choice.
“Leave him alone you bastard!” Gabriel shouted toward the guard that was threatening and physically hurting Castiel.
It truly saddened him to see his second man reduced to such a thing. He knew if they were going to get through this Castiel would have to get a backbone. It wasn’t as if Gabriel was not in pain too he was just doing a trick that his daughter had taught him. She had shown him how to concentrate and shut out the pain by intense focusing through meditation. At first he had thought it was crap but now he could see that she was right. And she was also part of the reason that he was determined to keep walking and would keep the strength to walk before Lucifer with his head held up proudly. His daughter…sweet Adele…was his inspiration and the extra power that he needed right now. Her image was in his mind as he was led in through the gates and to Lucifer’s throne room. It then faded as he was pushed and then forced on his knees in front of his older brother. A breath escaped him as he looked back up at Lucifer.
“Enjoying this?” Gabriel then watched as Lucifer became enraged at the guard for his mistreatment of Castiel and disintegrated him. Like he was going to buy that. When the guards left he spoke again. “Do you really think that I am going to believe that what you just did was an act of kindness?” He let out a chuckle. “Join you? You’re joking right? Brother, this is more than just a mere difference of opinion or whether we don’t cheer for the same football team. You go against everything that Heaven stands for. We join you and Heaven dies.” He was then pulled roughly by the collar and onto his feet. “This isn’t over, brother.” Turning his head he looked toward Lucifer defiantly as he was pushed out of the room in his sigiled manacles. “The deaths of my brothers and sisters will be avenged and you will fall!” He was then prodded and forced by the guard back outside.

Castiel could barely move let alone walk anywhere. The pain was unbearable. He knew he would have to try and stay strong if he was going to survive this but he also knew that he had never felt human torture before. Not like this, and what Lucifer was going to do to them...and this was ONLY the beginning. He felt like his life was going to start flashing before his eyes any minute. That happened to humans didn’t it? Castiel knew he wasn’t human but still. He was close to it, and he couldn’t heal himself. He wasn’t getting better and he knew that Lucifer did something to them. As they were brought before Lucifer Castiel was VERY weak at that point. He looked towards Gabriel pathetically. He knew that his brother wanted him to fight and he was, he really was. He also knew that he felt as though he was dying in the arms of this...soldier that held him.
As Castiel fell to the ground one more time he could hear Gabriel say ‘Leave him alone you bastard!’ to the guard. “Gabriel...no...” Castiel said softly. He didn’t want the guards doing this to Gabriel. Not when they were already doing it to him. Castiel closed his eyes painfully as they continued to head closer to Lucifer. That’s when he saw him and his heart jumped.
“Lucifer...” Castiel whispered softly as he saw his brother. He knew Gabriel and Lucifer were close before, but now things have changed. All Casitel wanted to do was go back to his family. Christine...he missed her so much, and his son...who he was barely getting to know. He had been in battle for so long now that he felt they never really had TIME to be a family, but Castiel did love them. He had a son, and he was so....smart.... Castiel was proud of him no matter what he did. They were brought before Lucifer and Lucifer yelled at the guard for treating Castiel the way he had. Still...Castiel knew Lucifer would do MUCH worse to him then the guard did.
“It was not an act of kindness...” Castiel said weakly to Gabriel. “He will do far worse to us then what this guard is doing....” he said. His voice was shallow and shaken, and he knew he must have sounded awful. Though he tried to hide the pain behind his voice. As Lucifer spoke to them, even in their thoughts Castiel cringed. He cringed even more as Lucifer mentioned joining him. That would never happen and Castiel would rather be tortured for eternity rather then join Lucifer. “It won’t...happen...” he said softly. He looked over at Gabriel as Gabriel spoke. “I will never join you...” he said to Lucifer “Never....” He looked over at Gabriel for a moment. They both had the same thoughts. He could tell. He tried to wink at Gabriel to let him know he was hanging in there but God, it even hurt to blink.
As the guard started to drag them back outisde Castiel cringed. This was their new home now? Was that it? Would they ever get to see thier family’s again? He kept thinking of Christine and his child. He was using them as a means of holding himself together. So long as they were safe, and hidden....Castiel would be fine. If Lucifer got a hold of them though...it would devastate him. He didn’t think that humans.... handled death so well, and Castiel knew, he knew that he wasn’t going to should anything happen to his family. “I want to see them once more...” he whispered to Gabriel. He got choked up. “I want to get a message to them.....tell them i am here and...not to come....” Cas whispered. “There is no way for us to do that...” he sighed. “I am picturing Christine...and...” he smiled weakly. “It is holding me together...” he said.
"Not for long its not....Lucifer will get Christine too...didn't you know Castiel? She was meant for him....she will ALWAYS be his...." the guard said looking at Castiel for a minute and he grinned. He took out a whip and whipped Castiel's back to get him to keep moving. Instead Castiel fell to the ground and skinned his hands AND knees. He got up limping and looked at Gabriel. He looked at the guard and suddenly punched him. The guard whipped him once more and Castiel cringed. Finally he got up and the guard looked at him.
"You two WILL obey!" he snapped looking over at Gabriel as well. "You WILL obey and you WILL come with me!" he said and grabbed Castiel by his coat collar. He lifted him up, "WALK, NOW," he said.
Castiel attempted and started to limp. He looked back at Gabriel trying to hide his shaking hands. He knew it was stupid to try and punch out the guard, but at least he had tried. He had to do SOMETHING.
"You heard...Lucifer...you are not meant to torment us yet..." Castiel said to the guard.

When Lucifer had first been created by God he had been second after Michael. Then had come Raphael and finally Gabriel. The brothers had established a close relationship with one another and were basically role models for the other angels that followed. Each one of the brothers had their own garrisons and were liked by all. There was no tension whatsoever and no one questioned their father’s will. Heaven was in complete harmony. All of that changed after humans were created. Lucifer did not like these hairless, flawed apes and constantly argued about them particularly with his brothers. But being ordered to bow down to them? Well, that was too much for Lucifer to take and he downright refused. And what did he get for sticking up for his angelic brothers and sisters? He was banished from Heaven by Michael and eventually confined into a cage. But his revenge upon mankind had already been set into motion. And it was also at that moment that evil had been created along with free will. This had been something that actually been written long before it became a reality. And eventually Lucifer would be released from his prison and face the very brother who had imprisoned him in a battle to the death.
However he had not counted on Sam and Dean Winchester to try and put a monkey wrench into that destiny. It was also supposed to be so easy but it had been anything but. All it took was one simple word from Sam Winchester and the battle would begin. But he had been insistent on not accepting his destiny as Lucifer’s vessel. Curse that damn older brother of his! He truly had not been able to understand Sam’s reluctance and was actually calm and collective about the whole situation. All he wanted was to take part in the battle that had been foretold and make mankind pay for him being exiled all that time ago. As far as he was concerned God had created The Devil and not him. He had tried to stand up for his brothers and sisters and been punished for it. Why had God allowed this to happen to him? He had been his favorite son and yet allowed this to happen? How was that possible? God had taken a vacation and left his children to fend for themselves.
Of course everything had changed now and it wasn’t Michael who he had battled but Gabriel. He definitely had not seen that one coming. Did God have a sense of humor or something? I mean battling Michael was one thing since he was a fierce warrior but God’s messenger? Gabriel had been fortunate that he needed time to regain his powers again after escaping the cage or otherwise that contest would have been over before it had even begun. However he had underestimated Gabriel and his angelic army and the war that should have been over had gone on for two years. Granted he wasn’t personally in any of those battles but he was informed. It surprised him that his younger brother had actually chosen to take part in the final battle. When he received word that they had been victorious and that Gabriel and some of his army had been captured it brought him great joy. The battle between Heaven and Hell was now officially over because its leader and King had been captured. King of Heaven? Oh yeah Gabriel being that still gave him quite the chuckle. He was WAY more of a king than his younger brother.
“Actually…I am enjoying this, brother,” Lucifer replied back to Gabriel. “You have no idea how long I pictured you groveling on your knees before me. Because you have to admit that you have lost respect for me over the years. Whatever happened to that loyalty that you used to share?” He shook his head and walked over to Gabriel bending down to him and grabbing him by the hair to look at him. “You should have just stayed dead, Gabriel. To think that you could actually defeat ME? I was commanding garrisons before you were even a thought in our father’s mind. You would have been wise to join me. But….you made your choice and now have to live with the consequences that come with it.” He then let go of Gabriel’s hair and turned to Castiel. “And you are his brother in crime. Not an act of kindness? If I had it my way you would both be lying on the floor with scorched wings just like your army back on that battlefield. But you’ll conform soon enough.” He looked toward a guard. “Take them to Divine Square and wait for me there.”
“Yes, my Lord,” the guard replied with a slight bow before pulling Gabriel to his feet and prodding him with a weapon and leading him outside. The other guard did the same thing with Castiel and soon both angels were being led through Morningstar City in their shackles. As they walked people were gathered on the streets. At first they just stood there like zombies. There was a mixture of both children and adults. They watched Gabriel and Castiel being pushed and suddenly began to throw objects at them while booing and hissing.

Castiel was ready to fight with Gabriel until the end, and now....it looked like that end was coming. Cas had to admit he was a bit terrified. There were some things he was starting to regret, like saying goodbye to Dean and Sam for instance. All the things those boys gave him...everything they had all done for each other, he knew the boys deserved to know what was going to happen to him. Castiel listened as Lucifer spoke to Gabriel. He became more fearful then he had been. He knew Lucifer was right, deep down, but deep down, Castiel also knew that their Father brought them both back for a reason, and it wasn’t for THIS reason. As Lucifer spoke of gabriel’s poor attempt to defeat him Castiel rolled his eyes a bit. He glared at Lucifer as he was speaking and was trying to show little to no fear.
As Lucifer turned towards Castiel, he gulped a bit. He couldn’t help it, no matter how much he had tried to hide his fear he knew that it showed. “I will follow Gabriel until the end Lucifer...” Castiel said softly looking over at his brother. “I am not afraid of you. Not anymore...” he said. “You may kill us Lucifer...someday, but... Father WILL destroy you,” Castiel said to him. “I have...” Castiel looked over at Gabriel more weak then ever. “More faith in Gabriel then in anything else...I....” he looked at him and cringed as he felt pain stabbing him all over his body. “I would do anything for Gabriel....” he said closing his eyes as the pain overcame him.
He knew it was a stupid thing to say to his brother, and he knew Lucifer would have a field day with it, but he didn’t care. As Lucifer told the guard to take them to Divine Square, Castile flinched a little. That sounded like...not so much fun at all, as Dean would say. He tried to smile at the thought but even that hurt. As he felt the weapon on him Castiel reluctantly got to his feet. Of course he could barely walk because he was already so injured. There were tears in his eyes and he barely even noticed them, it was mostly because the tears were from pain.
As they walked the streets of Lucifer’s domain, Castiel watched as people came to stare at them, as if they were some freaks from another planet or something. That was when the rocks and object started to get thrown on them. Castiel fell over when a rock hit him on the back of his already hurt leg. He fell to the ground and the guard held a gun to him. “I can’t...” Castiel whispered. His leg was bleeding from the rock and the people kept throwing them. He couldn’t get up. He could feel that his ankle was sprained. Or broken, either way, it was turning black and blue.
“GET UP!” the guard yelled at Castiel.
Cas still had tears in his eyes, but he couldn’t help it. The pain was too much for him. He tried to get up and then he fell to the ground again. It was broken. He broke Jimmy’s leg, must have been when he tripped. Or maybe it was sprained, either way, he could hardly walk. Cas found himself on the ground with his hands over his head. The guard still pointed the gun towards his back. Castiel waited for him to pull the trigger, but nothing came yet. He looked over at Gabriel helplessly.
Finally, after some of the booing stopped and the crowd stared at Castiel like he was some ignorant asshole the guard had enough. He grabbed Castiel by the arm and then helped him walk. Castiel knew that Lucifer would not have allowed the guard to hold him.
They finally made it to the Divine Square as Lucifer called it. Castiel saw a hugh crowd of people and he was placed standing next to Gabriel. He looked at his brother once more and attempted to lean on his shoulder for support. The guard pulled him off and Castiel fell to the ground in pain. “Christine...” he whispered softly shaking his head trying to think of her. His voice was cracked as though he had been crying, but it was more nerves then anything else. He closed his eyes as he waited for what was going to happen next. He pictured Christine....he and Christine both...together. “I love you...” he whispered outloud but seeing her face in his thoughts. He reached out his hand as if to grip her towards him. Then he collapsed but he was still coherent, just exhausted.

When the prophecy had been foretold about how Michael and Lucifer were to battle on the planet Earth no one could ever have guessed what the outcome would be. The angels had been certain that they would be the victors but at the time they had underestimated Lucifer. Through the time that he had been trapped in his cage he had been gaining both strength and the need for revenge. The whole time that he was incarcerated all that consumed his mind was getting back at the human race and Heaven for what had been done to him. All that he felt was anger and other negative feelings. Any aspects of him being an angel were all but gone. It was for these reasons alone that Lucifer was a very dangerous foe. It was true that the angels had Michael who was considered their best and fiercest general. But in the case of Lucifer he had strategy and cunning which could easily trump that. And when he had been released from his cage it had sent a chain reaction that had been felt around the world and some say shook Heaven’s gates themselves.
But of course now the entire world and Heaven knew that the battle had taken place but not between Lucifer and Michael. No, that cast list had actually been updated to Gabriel. Yes, The Messenger of God and Spirit of Truth had become the leader of Heaven. For some reason it had been deemed that the leadership sword be passed to him upon his resurrection. It had not been an easy feat for Gabriel but he had finally convinced Heaven to support him and even Michael who had been reluctant because of no longer being leader had fallen into line. At the time it had been believed that Lucifer was still trapped in his cage and so the threat of Hell was no longer an issue. Gabriel had begun to set things into motion and hope to Heaven had been restored. But then five years later that illusion was shattered when purgatory was opened and all its dark creatures were unleashed upon the Earth. That had been the first sign that indeed Lucifer had escaped from his cage and was now once again walking upon the planet. Then had come the other signs that signaled the Apocalypse was once again in full swing.
The humans had prayed to their god or gods asking that they would be saved. Some had questioned why the events were happening in the first place. It was almost as if the Apocalypse the second time around was far worse….it was. Lucifer’s rage had intensified and this time his attacks were precise and quick. He had even cornered the brave hunters who had so many creatures to deal with they didn’t know which end was up. This was where Lucifer had been smart because he created a diversion for the hunters while he carried out his main mission….enslavement. And how did he do that? Through fear and manipulation. Those who had been the protectors were now having to protect themselves from death. Faith amongst the planet had plummeted which made it easier for Lucifer to step in and convince others to join him. He made others believe that Heaven and God had abandoned the humans and left them to die. But if they came to his kingdom he would protect them. This is where some of Gabriel’s original followers had ended up. And now…it was where Gabriel was now as well.
“Respect?”Gabriel asked as he looked back at Lucifer wincing slightly as his hair was pulled. “What would you know about respect? You mean the respect that you showed father when you chose to deify him? The respect I had for you died when you created the first demon, brother. When you chose to stand against Heaven’s true purpose. You want respect? You need to earn it from me. And as for joining you that shall NEVER happen.” A breath escaped him as Lucifer let go of him and then went to speak to Castiel. “This isn’t over, brother!” he replied over his shoulder as he was led toward the square.
So far Gabriel had kept a promise to himself and that was he had walked into Morningstar City with his head held high. The guards had tried to beat him down but he had refused to submit. He had carried the thoughts and images of his family with him and it had strengthened him. As he walked he remembered just why he had fought so hard and risked his life….it was for his family. So that they would have a safe place in which to live and have a future. Walking through the city he had not even glanced at the crowd that was gathered on the streets. He continued to look straight ahead not wanting to meet their eyes. The eyes that he would have seen would have been filled with something that he didn’t want to face. As far as he was concerned he had let all of these people down. He had failed them. And as he walked and felt the objects hitting him followed by the booing and hissing it confirmed it. The anger and confusion was evident in their voices. A few objects hit him causing him to lose his footing but he quickly regained and kept his head up as he walked past them. There was no possible way that he was going to let this break him. He would not fall before Lucifer’s subjects but be the leader that he truly was. The guard continued to push him until they reached the square. Gabriel looked ahead and saw some steps leading up to what appeared almost like a courthouse. Boy Lucifer spared no expense did he?
“Move along!” the guard replied behind him before urging him forward again and slowly up the steps. When they reached the top he then pulled on Gabriel’s chains and forced him to look into the crowd that was gathering. “Take a look at the humans that you let down, FORMER King of Heaven. Let them see you for the true coward that you are. See how much they despise you.”

Castiel had never thought things would get this bad. He never pictured himself walking with Gabriel to their death pretty much… He never thought of this as…the end. He sighed and looked around as he saw everyone throwing things at them, as if they were the worse creatures on Earth. Castiel closed his eyes sadly trying to block it all out. He just kept walking, as much as anyone of them could be expected to walk. Especially since they couldn’t fly or anything now. This was possibly the worse thing that could have happened to Cas and Gabriel. He had fears this throughout the war, and now it was actually happening. Castiel heard what they were saying to Gabriel, but he was in so much pain he couldn’t comprehend it much. He closed his eyes a bit as he prayed. He prayed that their Father would soon restore all this, even if he wasn’t exactly around.
Castiel also heard what they were saying about the King of Heaven, about the humans that they were saying Gabriel let down. He closed his eyes and looked over at him, Gabriel was walking tall and Castiel had to do the same thing. He finally got up and managed to do so . “Gabriel…do not listen to them,” Castiel said to him, “Please, do not listen….this is not your fault, “ Castiel said over and over again hoping that Gabriel WOULD listen. “This is THEIRS. For taking over….everything…for runing everything….for serving Lucifer…” Castiel nearly spat out his name.
Castiel looked around at the crowd with Gabriel, remembering the times when the humans were somewhat happy. He couldn’t just accept the fact that God was going to do this to them now. After everything would God REALLY do this to them now? And why…why would God put them in this kind of danger? Didn’t he know that two of his sons were in danger? Didn’t he know what was happening to them? Castiel figured God was probably long gone at this point and there was no hope for them, except…for them to have faith in their Families.
Castiel waited, he waited for the guards to pull them up once more before going over to Gabriel and looking him straight in the eyes, “I will follow your lead….” Castiel said to him, “I will not let them win….they can not break me…..not as easily as they would hope…” Castiel said, “I will PRAY to our Father that he will rescue us, and when he DOES,” Casitel said loudly so the guards can hear, “They will ALL be smited!” he said. As Castiel moved along with the guards, or started too, he saw also something that looked like a courthouse. Were they going to be put on trial? Cas doubted it. He doubted anything like that would happen. Lucifer would probably punish them right away if he could, and…he could….

While in Heaven, Lucifer had to face the facts that Michael was the top archangel brother and had to follow his lead. It wasn’t that he despised Michael because he didn’t. Compared to the other archangel brothers he and Michael were actually the closest. He learned a lot from Michael when it came to fighting whereas he taught him about enochian magic. The combined powers of the two brothers would make them very difficult to defeat. At first Lucifer had been ok with him and Michael sharing that together but then one day it changed. When God began to pay more attention to Lucifer than all the others and doted his love on him above all it changed him forever. Now Lucifer no longer wanted to share the spotlight with anyone…not even Michael. Deep down he was jealous of Michael being placed as leader of Heaven in God’s absence and wanted that role for him. But of course at that time he had never been given that chance because he was vanquished and sent to Hell. However it didn’t mean that he still didn’t want that leadership role and it consumed his thoughts while he was in his cage.
Not only did he want revenge against the human race but also against both Michael and God as well. As far as he was concerned they were all responsible for what had happened to him. And his father may have loved him most but he had still sent him to Hell. The battle would take place between he and Michael only Lucifer would win not only the planet but would take Heaven as well. And once that was done? Then he would set on defeating God. In doing so he would be the most powerful thing in the universe. But of course he had been defeated by Sam Winchester whose will was stronger than he realized and was right back in the cage. Then he had been given his second chance and now that Gabriel was defeated he intended to fulfill his original plan of domination. Earth was now his and he was already influencing his dominance over it. Now that his younger brother was his prisoner he would prepare for his assault on Heaven. As for Gabriel? He would serve as a message and example to all that tried to oppose him. The fear he would instill would even rival Michael’s.
Lucifer knew that the walk to Divine Square would be a long one for Gabriel and Castiel. What Gabriel didn’t realize was that the people in the streets had been brainwashed to believe that Heaven was responsible for all their agony. They had been taught to despise the angels except for Lucifer and that God did not care about what happened to them. Once they gave up hope it was easy for Lucifer to make his way in with promises of giving them food and shelter. To protect them from whatever else existed out there. As far as the people of Morningstar City were concerned Lucifer WAS God. He had saved them from utter destruction and they were not trying to survive outside the walls like other humans were. All they had to do was worship their King and their lives would be saved. To them it was a small sacrifice as opposed to being torn apart by the dark creatures that lived outside the tall walls. And right now the Archangel Gabriel was the true enemy in their eyes and deserved to be punished for leaving them to die. Those that had once worshiped the Archangel Gabriel and called upon him for guidance were now hissing and throwing objects at him.
Because he was going to be in front of his subjects, he went about putting on his crown and robe. When he dressed in such a way it gained respect from his subjects. After his servants dressed him he headed toward a carriage that was waiting outside pulled by two black horses. After being helped into the carriage it started down the street and headed toward Divine Square. As it made its way through those in the street bowed until it had passed them. Lucifer could not help but smile every time that he saw this gesture performed. It just proved the influence that he had over his people. When the carriage slowly came to a stop, the door was opened and he was helped out. He slowly ascended the stairs to where Gabriel and Castiel were and behind him every person present instantly crouched down into a bow. When he finally reached the top of the stairs he turned to the crowd and raised his hands in the air which instantly caused the rest of the crowd to follow in bowing no matter if they were adult or child.
“My loyal subjects, you have proven your loyalty to me. Arise.” Lucifer watched as those in the crowd stood once again. “Since the beginning I have shown you my mercy by providing this city for you in which to live. I have shown you who the TRUE enemy is that allowed your planet to burn and for your race to struggle for survival. Countless times have I told you that God does not care what happens to you but I DO. As promised I have brought before you the one who is the TRUE reason for your despair.” He gestured to the guard who instantly brought Gabriel forward and pushed him to his knees in front of Lucifer. “I give you…the enemy….the Archangel Gabriel.” The crowd instantly began to boo Gabriel as Lucifer grabbed reached down and grabbed his head forcing him to look at the crowd. "Do you see them, little brother? Those WERE your people. And look at them now. They wish to see your blood spilled upon these very steps. And why should I not give it to them?" Lucifer bent down to Gabriel and turned his head to face him. "Believe it or not I do not wish to kill you, Gabriel. You are my brother after all. And I shall spare yours and Castiel's life if you will just give me the sword for the leader of Heaven. Tell me where it is and I promise that your blood shall remain within you instead of splashed upon these steps."

Gabriel had never been considered as the most popular archangel when it came to the humans. They would usually pray to ones like Raphael for healing or Michael for strength. No, he was just the messenger who was occasionally asked for guidance. Was he bitter about it? Maybe a little because he felt like he didn’t get as much respect as his other brothers. Maybe that was part of the reason when he became The Trickster that he delighted in making their lives miserable. Not that those who thought they were above anyone else didn’t deserve it. Some people did need to be knocked down a peg or two so they could see they were not as powerful as they thought particularly if it was causing harm to others. The same could be said of immortals as well who thought that they could what they want and no one would stop them. In the case of the humans Gabriel never thought in a million years that at this point in time he would be fighting to save them instead of causing chaos and teaching fatal lessons. But he had nearly perished on the battlefield trying to protect their race.
The thing was Gabriel did not blame the ones that had chosen to live with Lucifer in Morningstar City. How could he really? Many of them had families and just wanted to survive. They were scared just like everyone else and what was outside the gates of Lucifer’s city was quite frightening. The creatures that roamed those areas were what nightmares were made of. They had been released by Lucifer when he had opened Purgatory and were now destroying anything in their path. But inside Morningstar City these creatures were controlled. All those who dwelled within it had shelter, clothing and food provided for them. Gabriel knew that Lucifer had a secret agenda in doing such a thing but right now everyone had a choice. And to live outside in the camps was a dangerous one at that. Facing the possibility of running out of food and supplies was a reality. And not everyone was cut out for that kind of life. This was part of the reason that Gabriel was a good leader in that he weighed both sides and tried to understand. He would never place the blame on the humans because they were just as scared as he was.
“No, Castiel. It is not their fault. We cannot blame them for choosing to serve Lucifer. This is all about survival…taking care of family. There is so much uncertainty out there. They are scared just like we are. They would rather choose life here where at least they have a chance of surviving. But beyond these walls…there is only chaos and death.” Gabriel was actually speaking in a calm demeanor until Castiel began talking about smiting. It was then that he turned to Castiel as they were being dragged up the steps. “You listen to me, Castiel. There will be NO smiting of these humans! Do you understand me? And you will stop placing blame upon them for what has happened! This is precisely what Lucifer wants! To take the responsibility off of him and make us despise the humans. You wish to follow my lead then you will NOT do that. You will think with a clear head and understand that those out there in that crowd are frightened people just trying to survive. I have a family too, Cas and I can’t say there are things that I wouldn’t do to protect them too.”
The statement that he said was true. Cadence, Adele and Sebastian meant everything to him and in the right circumstances would do anything to save them. When he had looked into the faces of some of those in the crowd that was who he saw looking back at him. It was that reason that Gabriel was determined to stay strong and not let things get to him if he could. Plus he had to show these humans that yes he had been defeated in battle but his spirit had not been broken. And that he would still fight for them when he was able to escape from where he was. He turned upon hearing the crowd go silent and saw the carriage approach. Oh why was he not surprised by this? After all it was his prideful brother Lucifer. He was indeed taking this king business to the hilt and this was something that Gabriel would never have done.
Granted he was King of Heaven but did not flaunt it like this. Lucifer was playing the role and had complete control over those in the crowd. Or at least….he believed that he did. Gabriel knew that most of those people were just scared and if they believed they had a chance to escape it they would. All it would take is to find even just one of them and give them hope so that they might spread it to others. That was one advantage that they had over Lucifer in that he did not see human emotion for what it was. Right now Lucifer was acting just like Emperor Julius Caesar. Well everyone knew what happened to him in the end right? Let him have his spotlight while he had it. Somehow Gabriel would turn his subjects against his older brother even if he was a prisoner while doing it.
“You are not going to do this to me, Lucifer. I know those people are only your subjects out of fear. Because they believe that they have been abandoned by God and that there is no hope. Somehow…I am going to prove to them that is not true. And when I do…your precious subjects will turn on you quicker than you can blink.” Gabriel looked back at Lucifer with a set face when he looked toward him. “You want me to tell you where the sword is? Sure….I’ll tell you.” He took a deep breath as he realized what he was about to do. What was he about to do? Give the hope that the people out in that crowd desperately needed. He defiantly spat toward Lucifer leaving spittle dripping from his chin. “How about up your ass and around a corner?”

Castiel knew they were done for, though he didn’t say so outloud. It terrified him, but he knew the end was here. How many people didn’t he say goodbye to? Christine…Dean and Sam…. The thought terrified him still, and saddened him. He was SO weak he could barely move, and he hated that feeling. He hated the feeling of not being able to heal himself. As Lucifer started talking and going on about how he was giving his subjects the enemy, Gabriel…Castiel frowned. Gabriel was NOT the enemy, didn’t these people see that? He knew Lucifer brainwashed them into thinking HE was the good guy, and it bothered him, but still…
Castiel frowned, “Gabriel is NOT the enemy!” He shouted out loud not really caring what Lucifer and his men did to him. What MORE could they do? He was already beaten senseless practically. “They will BE our people again!” Castiel said angrily to Lucifer. He was starting to feel ‘hate’ towards his brother. Real hatred and he wished it would go away. He WANTED it to go away. He didn’t want to hate him, but with everything he was doing, he had. Lucifer was making them look like…circus toys or something in front of this crowd.
Castiel looked over at Gabriel as he spoke to him about the people. He sighed, “You are right Gabriel, and I am sorry,” Castiel said in a weak voice. He didn’t really want to do anything to these people, just to Lucifer for causing all this. He knew this was Lucifer’s doing, ALL of it. “I understand why they choose to follow him…” he said softly. What he DIDN’T understand was why they were so…determined to listen to this. Perhaps it was because they had no choice in the matter. Perhaps it was because Lucifer FORCED them to do all of this. “I…I wouldn’t smite the humans Gabriel, I am sorry,” he said again quietly. He wouldn’t, he was just weak and unsure of ANYTHING at the moment. He didn’t know what he was saying. It wasn’t him. He knew it wasn’t.
Only Lucifer would have to flaunt in front of a crowd like this one. Only HE would have to show off everything he had in front of them. Only HE would…. Do this to them. They were family once. Didn’t he remember ANY of that? How he could do this to his own brothers….was beyond Castiel. At least he was with Gabriel, at least he wasn’t alone, at least NEITHER of them were alone. Being alone would have been TEN times worse then being with each other. Castiel was grateful for that, but what he didn’t understand was why GOD was letting this happen? Why was he?
As Gabriel continued to talk Castiel listened to what he had to say to Lucifer. He was smiling. Gabriel was speaking like a TRUE leader. He would follow Gabriel till the end and NO one could take that away from him. NO ONE. Lucifer could torture them all he wanted, and nothing would change his mind. NOTHING.
Castiel looked at the guard that was holding him, and then he looked at Lucifer, “NOTHING will change our minds, our hearts, Lucifer, NOTHING!” he shouted. “I will ALWAYS follow Gabriel till the end. ALWAYS. Even if we loose. You can do whatever you want to us but….you CAN NOT change my heart,” he said “I will NEVER follow you and these people…will see you for who you REALLY are someday, someday when they do NOT fear you!” Castiel shouted and the guard whipped him in the back several times for saying it. Castiel fell to the ground in pain and agony as the guard struck him.
"Gabriel...." Casitel whispered in pain as he could feel the blood coming down from his back. He closed his eyes taking it as it came.

When Lucifer escaped from his cage the second time he vowed that things would be different. That he would not make the same mistakes he had the first time. He had been in a rush when he was brought back from Hell and had sent the Four Horsemen to do his dirty work. Granted it was also because he had Michael to deal with and didn’t know how much time he had for that. He also had impatience because he had been trapped in his cage for thousands of years and was anxious for revenge. The entire time they had been in Hell that was all that had consumed his mind was what he would do to the human race once he was free. That was the reason there had been so much chaos and destruction when he was first released. He was indeed letting the planet know that it was about to be destroyed and Lucifer didn’t care how many humans died in the process. They were the reason that his family had fallen apart and why he had been banished. Why should he have sympathy for them? After all who had sympathy for the Devil? He was just evil.
However the second time around he saw things a little differently. Oh sure he still hated the humans but he also found them useful. Not all of them believed in God and worshipped him. There were many who had lost faith during the first Apocalypse and had believed that they had been abandoned. These were the ones who were easily influenced because they had nothing to lose. That was why he created his kingdom of Morningstar City so that those who chose to worship him would be able to live under his protection. He made it seem that yes God had left them to fend for themselves and in this case left an incompetent leader with Gabriel. His little brother had failed to defend the humans and left them to die. Lucifer offered them a chance to live as opposed to surviving and meeting certain death at refugee camps. It had taken him years to get things into place before facing Gabriel and now his strategy had paid off. More of the humans had chosen to be his subjects and now he had turned them against Gabriel. They hated the younger archangel and practically despised God which had been his goal all along.
“Your words are lost to them, Castiel,” Lucifer replied as he briefly glanced toward the angel. “They believe that I am their savior now. I have offered them protection, shelter and food. What have you done? Given them a tarp to live under where they face uncertainty with each day? No. They know that as long as they remain within these walls they are safe.” He gave a snicker. “You shall follow Gabriel to the end? One should not make such promises, Castiel. You follow him blindly, like some kind of obedient puppy. Some would call it loyalty…devotion…I call it stupidity. You were supposedly striving to pull away from following orders like an obedient soldier and yet here you are doing it with Gabriel. Please explain to me how this is a change from what you were doing in Heaven? What YOU were chastising Michael for?”
His attention then went back to Gabriel who was the one that the crowd was focused on. After all he was the supposed King of Heaven and now he was in chains. And after what Gabriel had put him through he planned to make him suffer but he wouldn’t kill him. No, in this case Gabriel was a trophy to him and he would gladly display it for all to see. Humiliating his younger brother was top on his list and so far he was doing a good job of it. But to be given the sword of the leader of Heaven would be the sure way for Lucifer to obtain his real home then he would own both Heaven and Earth. Gabriel would be enslaved to him for eternity as would anyone else who followed him. Yes, he would allow his younger brother to live if he gave him the sword. But now as he raised his hand and felt the wetness from the spittle as he wiped it from his chin his anger began to grow. In Lucifer’s eyes Gabriel had just committed the ultimate insult against him. He had shown defiance to the king in front of his subjects. A deep growl from within escaped him as he grabbed Gabriel’s hair painfully causing him to arch his head back. His normal calm blue eyes were now filled with fire as he glared down at his younger brother with his nostrils flaring.
“You DARE to insult me like this?! In front of my people? Don’t you forget that I gave you a chance, Gabriel! But you chose to be defiant! Live with the consequences of the fate you have chosen!” Lucifer let go of Gabriel and stood up as he looked at one of the guards. “I want you to gather our strongest forces and send them to Camp Muinin Dochas. Let the attack be swift and make sure that NOTHING stands when you are through. NO survivors. I want that camp to be nothing but barren land! Make sure that no living creature crawls! Now go!” He watched as the guard nodded before walking off. “Take the prisoners to Execution Square where their sentences shall be carried out immediately!”

Gabriel had never seen himself as a fighter even if he was an archangel which was considered Heaven’s most powerful weapon. It was true that he was used in various rituals in the past but to him he was just a messenger. If one thought about it he was a messenger in that he delivered news to those who summoned him whether it was about asking for guidance or perhaps something to do with helping a woman who was infertile. He did have power but he just never used it in a military fashion like his older brother Michael did. Gabriel was more of an expert in the Enochian magic area than he was as a soldier. Oh sure he had his archangel blade and his power and strength but in a fighting situation he was not as well equipped. And the thing was Gabriel would have rather chosen not to fight. Those who knew what angels truly were would have found that very unusual. But Gabriel had also been amongst the humans more and was familiar with things like reasoning which was unfamiliar with angels. Angels would just do what they were told by their father and not question it.
In the years since Lucifer had escaped from the cage Gabriel had been training and not just by angels either. No, he had also learned from mortals and more specifically hunters like the Winchester brothers. Sadly once the Apocalypse went into full swing Sam and Dean were nowhere to be found. Or at least not where Gabriel was. He could only have hoped that they were out there somewhere making a difference. It seemed as if hunters came crawling out of the woodwork once the second Apocalypse had begun. But that was a good thing as the human race needed them if there was going to be any chance of survival against Lucifer. And with the creatures that had also been released from Purgatory only hunters had the ability to deal with them. So, one might say that Gabriel had been learning from the best and that also included his older brother, Michael. He hadn’t cared that Gabriel had been placed in charge of Heaven as much as wanting to defend it against Lucifer. Gladly he had stepped up to the plate and helped to train his younger brother in the methods of combat. But now after the battle that had taken place he was nowhere to be found.
As far as Gabriel knew only he and Castiel had been dragged back to Morningstar City. Were they the only survivors? Knowing that so many brothers and sisters had been lost including the possibility of Michael hung heavily upon Gabriel’s conscience. Yes, unlike other angels Gabriel actually had one of those. But as he faced the angry crowd in the square his emotions were tearing at him. He truly felt that he had let these people down and forced them to into where they were now. Protecting the planet and the humans had fallen to him by the will of God and he had failed. But it didn’t mean that he had completely given up either. He could sense that there were some that were just looking for an ounce of hope to try and break free. And that was why he was being so defiant toward Lucifer. So that he could be knocked down a peg or too much like he had done thousands of years ago when he had been The Trickster. Only this time there no pranks or sick sense of humor. No, this was real.
Gabriel realized that he had probably taken things too far by spitting at Lucifer but it was too late to turn back now. And the look in his older brother’s eyes was of pure anger. However Gabriel was determined to stand his ground as he stared back at him. This was the time to look like a true leader even if it cost something to him at least it would show that Lucifer had not beaten him. He was also proud of Castiel as he showed his unwavering support for him and their cause. Gabriel didn’t really care what happened to him if it helped to inspire even just a few people out in that crowd. However his stomach clenched as he heard the orders from Lucifer. He was going to send an attack on the camp? Now it was an entirely different situation as innocents were going to die because of angering his older brother. His family….Cas’ family…all those who had journeyed to the camp for shelter, protection and survival were going to meet with a terrible death and because Gabriel had been too hasty in his choice to rebel. As a guard came up behind him and grabbed his chain, he struggled.
“No! You can’t do that!” Gabriel screamed as he continued to resist the guard pulling him away. “Kill me if you must but let the camp and its occupants survive! Please, brother! It…it was wrong of me to defy you! I had no right to insult you! I shall kneel before you! Apologize in front of your people! Whatever you wish of me I shall do! Just….call off your attack on Camp Muinin Dochas. It is not fair that innocents die because of my insubordination to you!” He turned back around to glance at Lucifer. “Brother, if you have any love left for me…you shall not do this. Take my head if you will….my wings…I don’t care. But…spare my family and the other families which reside with them. They mean nothing to you. It is I that you have tried to obtain all these years and now you have me. Let them go, brother.”
